Exam 3 Respiration System Flashcards
external respiration
exchange of gases between lungs and blood
diffusion
only works over short distance
ventilation
is the exchange of air between the lungs and environment.
internal respiration
exchange gases between body’s cell and blood
larynx
air passage between the lower pharynx and the trachea that houses the vocal folds
esophagus
the musculomembranous passage extending from the pharynx to the stomach
bronchus
either of the two main branches of the trachea which contain cartilage in their walls.
bronchioles
are very fine thin walled tubular extensions of a bronchus
alveoli
are tiny thin walled capillary rich sacs in the lungs where the exchange of oxygen and CO2 take place.
conducting airways
both the upper and lower airways considered together
parietal pleura
serous membrane that lines the different parts of the wall of the pulmonary artery and is the outer layer of the pleura
visceral pleura
opposed the parietal pleura which causes a negative pressure within the space and forces the lungs to expand
pleural cavity
the space between the parietal and visceral pleura
thoracic wall
the boundary of the thoracic cavity
pleurisy
is the inflammation of the pleura which causes the layers to rub against each other.
