What is the definition of pain?
Pain is, “An unpleasant sensory, emotional experience with actual or potential tissue damage.”
What are some characteristics/considerations of pain?
-Pain is highly subjective and individualized
-Reduces the quality of life
-Just because a pt. is having difficulty expressing pain doesn’t not mean that they are not in pain.
Who sets the standards for pain assessment and management?
The Joint Comission
Who or what is the most relieable source description of pain?
the pt.
What is Acute Pain? What are the qualities of acute pain?
Acute pain is rapid in onset and ranges from mild-severe.
-Acute pain usually disappears with treatment of underlying cause
-result of tissue damage or organ disease
-i.e.- Surgeries, sore throat, pricked finger
What is Chronic Pain? What are the qualities of chronic pain?
Chronic pain lasts BEYOND the normal healing period.
-Long duration (sometimes a lifetime) and hard to define
-varies from severe to consistent or even has periods of remission and exacerbation.
-CAN LEAD TO DEPRESSION AND ANGER!
-ie. cancer, back pain, osteoarthritis, and peripheral neuropathy
What are the two classifications of pain?
Neuropathic-typically related to tissue injury
Nueropathic- typically related to PNS or CNS

-Teeth clenching
-Holding/ Gaurding painful part & immobility
-Bent Posture
-Grimaces
-Crying/moaning
-Restlessness
What are common Affective Responses to Pain?
-Exageratted Weeping and Restlessness
-Powerlessness
-Withdrawl
-Anorexia
-Depression
What are common Physiological responses to pain associated with sympathetic NS stimulation?
-Described often as Moderate and superficial
-Increased HR, BP, RR
-Pupil Dilation
-Pallor
-Decreased GI motility
What are common Physiological responses to pain associated with Parasympathetic NS stimulation?
-Characterized as Severe and Deep pain
-N/V
-Syncope
-Hypotension and brachycardia
