Exam 3 - Meds Flashcards
Describe Albuterol’s MOA
In the lungs: Sympathetic → Epinephrine → (adrenergic receptors - ß2) → BRONCODILATION
Albuterol is a ß2-Adrenergic agonist, so cells get more epinephrine and bronchials dilate
What are the side effects of Albuterol?
Nervousness, shaking, palpitation, HYPOKALEMIA, HYPERGLYCEMIA
(Stimulates epinephrine- activates glycogenolysis, K+ being pumped out of cell, increased HR)
What is the drug of choice for respiratory disorders?
Albuterol
Describe Olanzapine. What is it used for?
What is it’s MOA?
Side Effects?
Anti-psychotic
MOA: serotonin, dopamine, muscarinic receptor antagonist (attempting to rebalance neurotransmitters)
SE: WEIGHT GAIN, constipation, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia
When should weight loss drugs be started? When should it be discontinued?
Started:
• BMI >/= 30
•BMI >/= 27 w/other issues like high BP, high cholesterol, or T2DM
Stopped:
• Fails to lose sufficient (5-10%) amounts of body weight after 3 months
•Experience significant adverse events
Describe Lisinopril. What is it used for?
What is it’s MOA?
Side Effects?
Angiotensin Converting Inhibitor (ACEI)
MOA: blocks ACE, inhibiting conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II (which is a potent vasoconstrictor). This lowers aldosterone (so low Na/H2O reabsorption and more K reabsorption)
SE:
• Dry cough
• Hypotension
• Hyperkalemia
What kind of drugs end with -LOL? Describe
Beta blockers
MOA: decrease cardiac output and inhibit rening
SE: dry mouth, bradycardia, hypotension, fatigue, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, depression
