What is pharmaceutical care?
Dispensing legend drugs and providing cognitive services
Cognitive services include:
MTM
Prospective DR
DUR/DRR
Collaborative practice
Pharmacist prescribing
Patient counseling/education/adherence
Preventative health
Medication error reduction
Continous quality improvement
Unlicensed person
- is not HIPAA trained, and
- does not hold valid license, certification, permit, or registration issued by the board
Unlicensed person cannot perform any pharmacy dispensing functions related to legend drugs in the pharmacy
If a pharmacist’s licensed is displayed by a company and the pharmacist does not work there…
That licensed may be revoked
To be licensed in Indiana, all pharmacist applicants must
- complete college or school of pharmacy curriculum, including minimum 1,500 hrs of practical experience
- Submit an application as required by the Board (this is required for authorization to test for the NAPLX and MPJE)
- Take and pass the NAPLEX and MPJE in English
Failing the NAPLEX and MPJE
- If an applicant fails the either the NAPLEX or MPJE and wants to retake, they must complete a new application
- If the applicant fails after 2 sittings, they must appear before the board and receive permission
- Maximum of 5 attempts for the NAPLEX and MPJE
- Any misrepresenation/fraud in the application is sufficient for refusal of license or revocation of license
Requirements for being licensed in IN after being licensed somewhere else
- Complete the license transfer
- Pass the Indiana law exam (MPJE)
- If not actively practicing in the past 12 months, pass the NAPLEX
Qualifying RPh must decide what fixtures and equipment is needed to be in compliance to the law.
If the board determines a pharmacy is not meeting requirements how long do they have to correct it?

The whole store is a licensed area
- This is seen in Category 1 and Category 3 pharmacies
- The pharmacy must file an application with the board and abide by the closing hours in that application
Closed pharmacy while the rest of the store is opened
needs to be securely locked either floor to ceiling or monitored electronically for 36 hrs
if a breach occurs, it must be reported to the board within 72 hours
Record of hours opened without a pharmacist on duty
Requires pharmacists to maintain a record stating any hours that the pharmacy was open for business without a pharmacist on duty if those hours vary from the listed hours in the application
Must be kept for 2 years
resale of returned products
the medication must have been under the control of the nurse personel the entire time from a facility
if unit dose packed - must label an expiration date of 1 year or the manufacturer’s expiration date, which one is earlier
Continuing Education requirements
all pharmacists must complete 30 hours of CE every 2 years
Biennia run from Jan 1 of odd number years to Dec 31 of even years
if you are low on CE you can complete the remaining CE in the following biennia
Continuing Education licensure phase
there is a CE catchup window from Jan 1 to june 30
CE hours stipulations
OF 30 hours CE required:
- no more than 1/5 total hours may be business, management, or computer courses
- AT LEAST 4/5 of total hours must be pharmacy practice related
- AT LEAST 1/2 of total hours must be ACPE approved
