The main goal of the board of pharmacy
to protect the public and enforce the laws and rules that govern pharmacy
Types of sanctions (can be singular or multiple)
Revocation: take license away permanently
Suspension: take license away temporarily
Probation: can practice but with limits or additional requirements
Letter of reprimand: written expression of disapproval
Censure: verbal expression of disapproval
Fine: up to $1000 for each violation
Suspension
Can NOT practice
Typically suspended indefinitely and the board can set a minimum amount of time before you can apply for reinstatement
Revocation
License taken away PERMANENTLY, which means you can NOT practice
Surrender (NOT a sanction)
board cannot issue a surrender
Board mandated physical and mental exam
The board may require a physical or mental examination to determine if a practitioner is capable to practice
This requirement must stem from a disciplinary hearing, where RPh’s physical or mental ability to practice is an issue
Probationary licensure
The board may issue a probationary license and impose one or more of the following conditions:
Report regularly to the board on the matters requiring probationary license
Limit practice to those areas prescribed by the board
Continue or renew professional education
Engage in community service as directed by the board
Perform, or refrain from performing, an act that the board considers appropriate to public interest
Electronic prescribing of controlled substances
All controlled substance prescriptions issued by prescriber must be in an electronic format and be electronically transmitted
Electronic prescribing of controlled substances exemptions
may be written, faxed, or oral:
in emergency situations
if the prescriber is outside of indiana

Prescribing Opioid Limitations
A prescription for an opioid may not be written for >7 days:
If it is for an adult being prescribed an opioid for the first time
If it is for a child <18 years old
If it is for an animal for the first time by Veterinarian
Prescribing Opioid Exemptions
7-day limitation does not apply for:
Cancer
Palliative Care
Medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorder
A condition that is exempted by medical licensing board
Or if, in the prescribers professional judgement, a patient requires more
Dispensing Opioids Partial Fill
A pharmacist shall dispense, upon request of the;
Patient
Representative of the patient
Guardian of the patient
If an opioid prescription is partially filled, the pharmacist must:
Comply with 21 USC 829
Document that a request for partial fill was made by one of the people listed above
