Exam 3: language, culture, and thought Flashcards
How did a grammatical difference affect perception and memory??
The gendered objects influence the way the speakers of that language describe the object.
Their memory of the objects given name is more congruent with whether the objects gender matches its given name
How does a lexical difference affect perception and reasoning?
Color words affect color perception but not permanently
Number words affect counting ability
In what ways was language necessary for reasoning and in what ways was it not?
Not necessary for small exact numbers or large approximate numbers. Necessary for large exact numbers.
Because the sign language individuals don’t have the number words, they aren’t able to count correctly (type of reasoning)
linguistic relativity
weaker: language shapes concepts
linguistic determinism
stronger: no language = no concepts
