exam 3: Aphasoa Flashcards
Aphasia
problem producing speech or understanding speech
What is the most common cause of Aphasia?
Stroke in the middle cerebral artery
How do people with Broca’s Aphasia talk about the Cookie Theft Picture?
say very little words because they are not able to, the words they do say are congruent with the picture which shows they are able to comprehend the picture
How do people with Wernicke’s Aphasia talk about the Cookie Theft Picture?
saying full sentences but the words they are saying have nothing to do with the actual picture
How does written language look for both aphasia?
The way written language is produced is similar to how they do it vocally:
In Broca’s their hand writing is bad and they aren’t saying many words - however the words seem to have some congruency to them
In Wernicke’s the handwriting is fine and theyre writing in sentences, however what they are actually writing makes no sense
Anomia
Appears in both Aphasia, bad at remembering the name of objects
Broca’s characteristics
Motor word representations, not fluent, have good comprehension,
Wernicke’s characteristics
Auditory word representations, fluent, not comprehensive
Phonological Paraphasia
messing up with one letter - typically the first one ex. fish -> lish
Semantic Paraphasia
Semantic error - saying dog instead of cat because they fall under similar semantic categories
Neologism
Non words
In House model:
Broca’s aphasia = problem with motor representations of words
Wernicke’s aphasia = problem with auditory word representations
Conduction aphasia = problem with connection between auditory word representations and motor word representations
Jargonistic
A string of Neologisms
Conduction Aphasia and why does it occur
Preserved comprehension, relatively fluent production, Severe repetition impairment
Lesion in the arcuate fasciculus which is the connection between Wernicke’s and Broca’s area
