Exam 3: ICP Flashcards
Problems leading to ICR Dysfunction:
Perfusion- CVA ( vessel blockage ) , severe hypotension, damage or trauma to vessels or increased ICP
Neurotransmission- Malfunction (Alzheimers disease), leading to decrease in acetlycholine, drugs, stroke, infection
Glucose- Brain sensitive to hyperglycemia, cannot store glucose = constant supply needed
Pathological processes- Brain tumors, dementia, parkinsons
CPP
Amount of pressure needed to maintain blood flow to the brain
60-70 mmHG
Cerebral Edema
Swelling of the brain tissue that leads to increased ICP –> resulting in restriction of blood and spinal fluid from entering or leaving the brain
S/S: H/A most common
INV: Neck straight and HOB 30-45 degrees
Abnormal Posturing
- Late sign
: Decerbrate posturing ( exterior ) - more serious damage OUT
: Decorticate posturing ( flexor ) - in towards the cord IN
