Why did settlement of the Shenandoah Valley begin in the 1790s? What type of people settled in the valley?

A

Began as a result of British and Virginia politics designed to create buffer between more settled regions and French/Indian lands west.

Spotswood promoted expansion. Knights of the Golden Horseshoe went with him. House of Burgesses exempted settlers from paying quit rent on land holding west of fall line.

Vast majority were of German and Scotch-Irish background pushed out of Rhineland by series of wars and nudged out of Ireland by high rents, short leases, and increased poverty.

What difficulties did Virginia have in raining and disciplining troops?

A

Washington was very inexperienced. Only incentive was relief from paying county and parish taxes. Virginians only wanted to act when they were directly affected. Did not want to help wealthy in Ohio. lukewarm attitude to the war. Poor white men felt they were being hauled away like black slaves.

Also two types of troops: Militia and provincial troops.

A

British: saw themselves as savior s of Va. British planning and military strategy drove french armies away. Colonies reluctant partners at best. Colonials never met troop request and troops given were not up to expectation. British debt nearly doubled to 132 millions pounds

Virginia: saw themselves equal if not superior. Virginia always fulfilled at least 66% quota. Virginians were better fighters. British planned campaigns, Virginians had major contributions to victories. Reimbursement represented only 40% of costs. Y 1763 war debt was at 120,000 pounds.

Movement began with the Virginia declaration of rights. All men should enjoy the fullest toleration of religion. Wording allowed for toleration of other religions.
Thomas Jefferson than began presenting his argument for full religious freedom. It was not an immediate success but separation of church and state occurred in 1779.

What impact did the American Revokution have upon slaves, women and lower white class

A

The American Revolution significantly affected aspects of slaves and the status of women. It provided slaves with an opportunity to escape their bondage through joining the army, while it gave women an opportunity to proclaim a more public role in society. They were given a wide range of roles to further their independence in the war. Women were able to help support the cause which they played an important role in. This affected the relations between man and woman to a more bonded level. A woman was not only a wife and a mother but a mutual companion.
