Exam 3 Flashcards
Lymphatic, Immune, and Respiratory Systems
lymphatic system
chemical regulation of the body
blood cells mature and reside here
WBC go out of circulation and into the interstitial space where they are picked up my lymphatic vessels
what is lymph?
the fluid
-rich in proteins (albumin, antibodies, etc.)
-delivers large molecules into circulatory system
-gets fluid into the bloodstream and regulates composition of plasma
lymphatic vessels
contain no pump, nothing to generate pressure so fluid moves from high to low pressure
lymphatic capillaries
single layer of epithelial cells (like shingles on a roof- they are loosely overlapped)
-smallest dead end vessels
-anchored in place by collagen fibers which makes them very permeable (they can pivot to open and close which allows fluid to move in)
where are lymphatic capillaries not found?
bones, teeth, or nervous system
-not in solid body parts
-not with the blood-brain barrier
lacteals
lymphatic capillaries in the intestines (found on the villi)
what is lymph in the intestines called
chyle
what do lacteals do
absorb certain nutrients (fats, proteins, and other big molecules) and delivers it to the circulatory system
-the body does not absorb proteins through the digestive system because the proteins are broken down into amino acids
