What is a flower
the reproductive organ of an angiosperm
What is a fruit
a mature or ripened ovary of a flower along with its contents and any adhering structures
What is the receptacle
region where floral parts are attached
What is the sepal
outermost whorl floral parts that may be leaf-like or resemble petals, protects inner part of flower from physical damage and desiccation before it opens
What are the petals
variable in size, shape, colour, odor, attachment, symmetry
What is the stamen
includes the anther (contains pollen) and filament (stalk that holds up anther)
What is the pistil
Includes the ovary, stigma and style -pollen lands on stigma and germinates and the pollen tube grows through style to reach the ovule for fertilization. After fertilization the ovule develops into the seed
Why were flowers produced
to make the seeds less susceptible to biotic and abiotic stresses
