Plastic Representation (Warner)
A combination of synthetic elements put together to look like meaningful imagery, but which can only approximate depth and substance because ultimately it is hallow and cannot avoid close scrutiny.
Meaningful Diversity (Beltran)
4 Questions to consider:
- Are characters of color fully realized individuals?
- Do writers and producers feel interested and knowledgeable of non-white characters worlds?
- Does the diversity of the cast appear natural?
- Do the series or film producers exploit the natural of a stories setting or subject matter?
Inclusion Rider
Famous or well acquainted actors, directors, and producers stipulating in their contracts the addition of diverse actors and crew.
Reception Theory
Over arcing frame scholars use to explain how audiences make sense of media. Not interested in authors and creators of media only interested in the audience.
Encoding/Decoding Model
Acknowledge that media institutions imbed texts with particulars meanings and audience can interpret those meanings.
3 Step process:
-Encode: Producers and creators decide what they want text to be about
- Media text: film, book, tv show etc
- Decoding: How the audience interprets the message
Preferred Reading
The code used to create media texts. Draws on dominant ideology and hegemonic structures.
Dominant Code
Audience code is equal to the preferred reading or intended message.
Oppositional code
Recognized preferred reading but reject it in favor of a different code. J.K.Rowling and Cho Chang
Negotiated code
More common and a mash up of the preferred reading and audience’s own interpretation.
Fans (Henry Jenkings)
Obsessing over an artist or show. A Part of a group and community to liking social media. Fans create alternative and democratic communities.
Fan culture
Social and cultural practices of identity in relation to the group or person that are shared globally.
Participatory culture
Only possible with technology in digital age. Like social media and participate without obsessing over a group or totally diving into the culture.
Fan Entitlement
The fans have the right to tell show runner and creators how to make the show and what can happen.
Narcissistic identification
Fans go and gravitate toward certain content because they can identify with it.
Race bending
Changing the race of a character in new media adaptations. It can be seen well or not depending on narcissistic identification
