Exam 2 (Watzalawick) Flashcards
Who was Gregory Bateson
Applied cybernetics to animal and Human interaction, and introduced the concept of meta communication.
What concept did Gregory Bateson invent?
Meta Communication
What tradition are watzalawick, Beavin and jackson associated with?
Cybernetic Tradition
How does Watzalawick define cybernetic communication?
How communication gets used to effect and influence the environment?
How do Watzalawick, Beavin, and Jackson define “Relationships”?
“Interpersonal systems may be viewed as feedback loops, since the behavior of each person effects and is effected by the behavior of each other person.”
What is Homeostasis?
Interaction patterns keep the system in balance; to maintain the status Que.
What does Homeostasis explain about relationships?
Homeostasis says, within interpersonal or family systems, we would try to keep it the same, even if it is destructive to us. (ex - Marc’s ex, everything was about her.)
What are the 5 Axioms of communication?
- You cant not communicate
- Content and relational meaning
- The punctuation of the sequence of events
- Digital and analogic communication
- Instructions can be both symmetrical and complementary.
What does the Axiom “You cant not communicate” mean?
Meta communication, can still give off a meaning.
What does the Axiom “Content and relational meaning” mean?
- Content - What you are saying, Information.
- Relational message - Something that tells us who i am and who we are. Its meta communication. (ex - The group found that Courtney and Hank were acting a little different.
What does the Axiom “Punctuation of the sequence of events” mean?
- Punctuation, your talking about starting and stopping points.
- We choose out starting and stopping points, because that effects the interaction. (ex - Nagging wife, and withdrawing husband).
What does the Axiom “Digital and analogic communication” mean?
Digital - Starting and stoping points (Ex -01010
Analog - A message that does not stop (ex - Analog Watch)
That does the Axiom “Symmetrical and complimentary” mean?
Symmetrical interaction - We get into an interaction and we start mirroring each others behaviors (ex - someone starts yelling, so you start yelling as well)
Complementary Interaction - Give the greatest distance between interactions having a relationship based on difference. (ex - Straight man and comedian).
