Exam 2 study guide- Chapter 5 Flashcards
define finitude
our finitude does not make us sinful- it creates the possibility of sin, for our finite, incomplete nature induces a striving within us that can turn us away from God
define infirmities
not sin, are simply the inevitable results of our finitude. Our knowledge is little, our judgment is impaired, our memory fails, our patience weakens
define temptations
feeling the possibility and desirability of wrongdoing; however, it signals only that we have been presented with the possibility of wrongdoing and can see advantages in pursuing that wrongdoing
define sins of omission
deeds that are commanded by God and that we fail to perform
define sins of commission
deeds that transgress God’s law
how does powell understand sin as it pertains to chaos ?
chaos and nothingness appear in the form of sin. because we are created from nothing, we are incomplete.
Our existence is characterized by a striving for completion. we find this only by faithfully responding to God. instead of dwelling in the world that God creates, we create a world for ourselves, a world of sin.
define sin
“voluntary transgression” of a law of God. unrighteous
what is lowell’s opinion about John Wesley’s definition of sin?
sin is MORE THAN breaking God’s law through outward behavior. Inwardness is important in obeying God. The God we serve is not interested only in observation of the commandments, but also a heartfelt obedience
how does the world of sin contrast with God’s intention for creation ?
sin appears as foolishness, opposite of wisdom, mode of existence that takes no account of God
unrighteousness is breaking God’s law and failing to offer God our heartfelt, obedient, faithful response. in relation to God, goes hand in hand with injustice toward our neighbor
We place our hope and trust in created things, not God. this misplaced trust is characterized by destructive emotions such as anxiety and fear
