Q

What is stress?

A

Q

What is the differences between stress and strain

A

strain- deformation
stress- pushing or adding weight
*strain is the bending of the bone and stress is the amount place on the body

** everyone can have the same stress applied but the strain will be different on everyone!

22
Q

meditation

A

some have demonstrated the ability to induce a hypo-metabolic state

  • zen monks
  • indian gois
23
Q

Stress theory’s

A

life events
Hardiness
Social support

24
Q

Life Event theory

A
  • stress occurs when a situation requires more resources than are available
  • routine stress events are more significant than major ones that happen infrequently( bad stress)
25
Hardiness Theory
-if potentially stressful events are perceived as a challenge instead of a threat, less stress will result
26
Attitude is everything | Hardiness Theory
commitment, control, challenge
27
Resilience | Hardiness Theory
the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity - the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness - --ability to cope with stress & adversity
28
charles darwin quotes
it is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. it is the one that is the most adaptable to change
29
charles darwin quotes 2
in the struggle for survuival, the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting themselves best to their enviroment
30
What to take away from the darwin quotes
adaptability to stress
31
What makes a guy like sully
he needed to have the plane at 12% incline to hit the water without killing anyone. - - he was able to handle large amount of stress - --landed in the Hudson river after a bunch of bird killed both of the engines
32
Utah couple that dies hours of each other
they were married for 63 years. | they were unable to handle the stress
33
Social Support Theory
* stress occurs when there is not enough social support available to respond to the event effectively - -emotional - - financial
34
Major Components of stress
- stresser | - stress reaction
35
Stresser
- stimulus with potential for triggering the fight or flight response ( getting fired) - regardless of type, the body generally responds in the same way ( physiologically) once their flight or fight response is triggered.
36
Types of stressers
- biological - psychological - sociological - philosophical
37
Important factors about stressers
Duration- volume, how much | Degree- how hard, intensity
38
Strain
the physical psychological, behavioral outcomes of stress reactivity
39
Gender differences with stress
Females- more likely to flee, turn to others for help or attempt to diffuse the situation Males- more likely to be aggressive
40
venus- roman goddess- her hand mirror and comb
41
mars- roman god- his shied and spear
42
Eliminate All stress?
probably not a good idea - stress can have beneficial side effects related to motivation, stimulation and health - the relationship between stress and illness is a complete one - the Inverted U theory
43
Today stressed (angry) world
- road/ sky rage - over emotional "sports" parents - football - celebrities and famous people- above the law * people are super emotional * think of the stress with this prestintal election
44
Why so angery?
reasons?--probably not a simple answer
45
bunch of college stress
- biological reason / systems - such as crying, drinking, over eating - ways to help with stress - emotions - anger, joy, sad - mental problems
46
Locked in syndrome
- complete paralysis of all voluntary muscles exept the eye ( sometimes) - closest thing to being buried alive - result of a brain stem lesion in which the ventral part of the pons is damaged - --often precipitated by a specific type of stroke - ----- basilar artery * the diving bell and the butterfly (1997) * * eye tracking devices now!
47
stressors to humanity
Capernicus- world was not the center of the universe -- sun was the center of the universe Darwin- evolution Many others
48
SNS Effect
-↑ HR, contractility of heart, dilate coronary arteries, constrict and arteries, dilated pupils, dilate bronchial tubes, .... there were more
49
Stress and the heart
hypertrophy- left ventricular thypertopy - good LVH - Bad LVH * heart beats billions of times in a life time
50
Stress and Muscle
subconscious muscle tensins ( bracing) - tension headaches - migraines - backaches - neck/shoulder aches - -Example * teeth /jaw clenching * sitting on the edge of your seat * gripping the steering wheel hard
51
Lie detector test
- polygraph based on - -salvanic skin response - HR,BP, BR, BT, voice patterns * * some individuals have mastered remarkable control over their psychopathology
