Exam 2- Stress Flashcards
Stess=
pressure- adaptability
What is stress?
Stress is your body’s way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. When you feel threatened, your nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol, which rouse the body for emergency action.
What is the differences between stress and strain
strain- deformation
stress- pushing or adding weight
*strain is the bending of the bone and stress is the amount place on the body
** everyone can have the same stress applied but the strain will be different on everyone!
Types of stress
- body sees stress as stress! We as humans talk about it in types.
- Eustress- things that are good to the body
- Distress- over training, things that are bad for the body.
Application of Stress
Exp is applying stress to the body
- make sure you have stress relief
- Stressor today→ economy, health care, war, technology
Information overload can add to stressors
- internet- google, youtube, FB, wiki
- Communication- email, cell phone, texting, twitter, snapchat
- smart phones smart watchers
Who is Hans Selye
-Canadian endocrinologist → The stress of life (1956) -summarized stress reactivity into a 3 phase process -coined the term stress -general adaption syndrome (GAS)
(GAS) General Adaption Syndrome
1 alarm
2 resistance
3 exhasution
Alarm
first reaction to stressors resistance diminished
Resistance
if the body adapts to the stressor ↑ resistance occurs alarm reaction disappe
Exhasustion
long continued exposure wears down body resistance, adaptation energy is exhausted. Alarm reaction sign reappears individual can eventually die.
Harold G. Wolff
- MD who studied WW2 POWs
- 1% held by germans died before release
- 33% held by japanese died before release
Why did the japanese have more deaths during WW2
the japs put the pow under so much more stress. this amount of stressed caused them to die.
Walter B. Cannon
physiologist at havard medical school
- came up with homeostasis (1926)
- identified the stress reaction→ fight or flight
what happens during a fight or flight response
↑ HR, BP, Breathing rate
Why do human and animals have this innate programming
for survival
what is it place into today world?
- think of when someone get pulled over- this response does nothing to help you but it happens
- also think about when someone is being attacked- think of when people at work scare me this happens
How do you deal with stress
relaxation: a series of bodily changing that are the opposite of the stress reaction
Relaxation techniques
1 autogenic relaxation
2 progressive relaxation
Autogenic relaxation
evoking sensation of heaviness warmth, and tingling in the limbs??
