What is asthma?
Inflammation of the airway causing hyperresponsiveness and airway obstruction
What should you remember about wheezing in kids?
Wheezing before 3 y/o= LRTI
What is an atopic wheezer?
Kid that is most likely to have development of persistent asthma
What is an objective indication of vocal cord dysfunction?
Flat inspiratory loop on PFT
What does a kid with any kind of persistent asthma need?
Daily inhaled corticosteroid
If a kid wakes up at night with coughing or wheezing, what does this imply?
This means they are NOT in the “intermittent” category
What should you do in a child over 5 with suspected asthma?
PFTs
How is the only form of long-term management for persistent asthma?
Inhaled corticosteroid
*Note that these take up to 4 weeks to take effect
What is the black box warning for long-acting beta 2 agonists?
1) Increased risk of exacerbations
2) Not for ACUTE exacerbations
Is Atrovent indicated in the in-patient setting?
