What is the most common occupational lung disease?
Occupational asthma
What is important about the timing of symptoms in occupational asthma?
- Worse at work
- Better with vacation/ time from work
*May present with a lag in sx. i.e. go to work, come home and then sx. start
If you think a patient has occupational asthma, what should you do?
1) Methacholine challenge
2) Peak flow at and away from work
*Positive test is a decrease in 20% of FEV1
What is occupational COPD?
COPD attributable to occupational exposure
What is popcorn lung disease, or flavoring lung disease?
- Severe bronchiolitis obliterans induced by diacetyl butter flavoring in popcorn
- Also seen with flavoring added to coffee
*Same pattern as COPD
What is radon?
Byproduct of uranium decay
Where is the highest concentration of radon in the US?
Iowa
What causes death from smoke inhalation injury?
CO or Hydrogen Cyanide
