Exam 2 Lecture 2 Flashcards
Ossification
The process of creating new bone
2 types of ossification
- Intramembranous Ossification
- Endochondral Ossification
Intramembranous Ossification
-Occurs at mesenchymal membrane
-Throwing seeds in the ground and watching it grow
Endochondral Ossification
-Grows at hyaline cartilage and is replaced by bone on diaphysis side
-Osteogenic cells
Which bone is remodeled the most and the quickest? Why?
-Distal aspect of femur
-This gets the most wear and tear bc body weight is constantly putting being put on it
Appositional Growth versus Interstitial Lengthening
Appositional Growth: Grows in gurth
Interstitial Lengthening: Grows in length
Which of the 5 zones is close to the epiphyseal plate?
Zone 1
Which of the 5 zones is closest to the Diaphyseal side
Zone 5
Stress fracture
-Healthy bone, but too much stress
Pathological Fracture
Unhealthy bone, regular stress
Closed Fracture
Skin is not broken through by bone
Open
Skin is broken, bone goes through the skin
Complete
Bone is broken into 2 or more pieces “shattered”
Incomplete
Bone is only partially broken and pieces remain in correct place
Osteoporosis
-Bone disease where bone density declines where bones are extremely brittle leading to more fractures
-estrogen important to maintain bone density
Axial Skeleton
-Thoracic cage (ribs, sternum)
-Vertebral column
-Skull
Appendicular Skeleton
-Arms
-Pectoral girdle
-Legs
-Pelvic girdle
