- sinus (pain bhind brow or cheekbone)
- tension (band squeezing head)
- cluster (pain around eye)
- migraine (long-duration > 4 hrs)
what is aura?
sensation such as visual changes that signal onset of headache or seizure
1st phase of migraine w/ aura
Prodromal
symptoms occur hrs to days b4 headache
depression, irritability, feeling cold, food cravings, anorexia, chng in activity level, incr. urination, diarrhea or constipation
2nd phase of migraine w/ aura
Aura
lasts
3rd phase of migraine w/ aura
Headache
↓ in serotonin levels
throbbing unilateral, incapacitating headache
often associated w/ photophobia
N/V, fatigue, irritability
last from 4 to 72 hrs
4th phase of migraine w/ aura
Recovery
pain gradually subsides and can last up to 25 hrs
neck and scalp muscle contraction muscle ache and localized tenderness exhaustion and mood changes physical exertion exacerbates headache pain pts sleep for long time
describe migraine w/o aura
throbbing dull pain
photophobia or phonophobia (light/sound sensitivity)
occurs early in morning, during stress, PMS, fluid retention
atypical headache
last longer than 72 hr
triggers
tyramine containing food and beverages alcohol and chocolate caffeine nitrates MSG aspartame yeast foods fumes (paint, gas)
