Exam 2 Floral Flashcards
Principle of Design
- Fundamental guidelines for aesthetics that govern the organization of the elements
- These are guidelines to follow, not necessity a set of rules that cannot be bent or stretched when the needed situation arises
- Principles are divided into primary and secondary levels
Element of Design VS Principle of Design
- Elements are the tools
- Principles is the application
Primary Principles
Proportion, balance, dominance, rhythm, harmony, unit….
Secondary Principles
Scale, focal point, repetition, accent, depth, tension, variation…
Balance
- A feeling of stability and security
- When the components of a design are placed on either side of an axis to give the feeling of stability and security
- A state of equilibrium is achieved when the components of a design are so composed that they have a feeling of stability and security
Types of Balance
- Symmetrical
- Asymmetrical
- Mechanical (gained by proper placement of the main stems of a skeletal design)
- Visual (gained by a selection of correct-sized material)
Physical Balance
The actual weight distribution of the floral materials used
Visual Balance
The ways the floral materials are arranged to create harmony visually
Proportion
- The relationship of each component of the design to each other
- Pertains to size, shape, quantity, form, and the environment
Scale
- The relative ratio of the size of a composition to its surroundings
- The container is ⅓ and the floral is ⅔ because a design golden ratio should be the tallest florals 1.5x the length, height, or width, of the container
- On a table the scale is 1/9th
Rhythm
- Related orderly movement
- The visual movement throughout the design is achieved by means of repetition
Secondary Principles of Rhythm
Depth, Repetition, Transition
Depth
- Placement of materials at different levels in and around an arrangement
Repetition
The repeating elements within a composition (lines, form, spaces, material/components)
Transition
The gradual transition of one thing to another
Dominance
The visual organization of a design that emphasizes one or more aspects… place to which the eye is drawn to
secondary principles of Dominance
Focal, Accent, Emphasis
Focal Dominance
Eye is drawn or attracted (where the axis of the arrangement meets, pretty much NEVER the top)
Accent Dominance
Detail added to a design to enhance interest and emphasize other strong elements, which can be botanical or non-botanical
Emphasis
An area in a composition that is given importance to make it stand out
Harmony
- Personal pleasing relationship
- The personal pleasing relationship that exists between the various units or components of the design to make a whole composition (if it is pleasing in appearance, attractive…..)
- Expressed through contrast and blend (the blend is most common)
Floral Symphony
Each instrument resides in its own section and yet all appear to be playing the same tune
Unity
- Is oneness of purpose, thought style, and spirit, a cohesive relationship of individual components
Should be able to list the principles that add to the unity, which can be line, color scheme, texture
Unity VS Harmony
- Unity is more about seeing the groups of individual components
- Harmony is the overall relationship between all the components the theme, mood, and final effect of the design
