Q

What are the different HIGH cloud types ?

A

High clouds appear during temperature Barlow -25c or -13f

Cirrus - transparent. Dictate silky strands of falling ice crystals being blown laterally.

Cirrostratus - thin white veil

Cirrocumulus - small white round patches arranged in a wavelike pattern

Q

What are the different MIDDLE cloud types ?

A

Middle clouds temperatures between 0c and -25c (32f and -13f)

Altostratus - gray or bluish white layers that totally or partially cover sky. Thick. Sun view is like “through frosted glass”

Altocumulus - roll like patches or puffs that often form waves or parallel bands. Large sized cloud patches and sharp edges which indicated presence of water droplets rather than ice. Rarely produces rain that reaches ground. EARLY ON WARM SUMMER DAY = THUNDERSTORM

Q

What are the different types of LOW clouds?

A

Low clouds temperatures of greater than -5c or 23f

Stratocumulus - large irregular puffs separated by areas of clear sky. Very little rain.

Stratus - uniform gray layers stretching from horizon to horizon. Fog occurred when stratus meets ground. Usually only drizzle.

Nimbostratus - light rain or snow falls. Thicker. Darker gray and less uniform than stratus.

Q

Temperature of a Warm and a Cold cloud ? What clouds make ice crystals

A

Warm - greater than 0c (32f)
Cold - at or less than 0c (32f)

High clouds are colder than low clouds.

COLD clouds made up of ICE CRYSTALS (wispy edges)

WARM clouds are made up of water droplets. (Sharp edges)

Q

What are the different types of fog?

A

Advection Fog - formed by advective cooling ( when advecting air passes over a cold surface, air mass may be chilled to saturation in its lowest layers) in early SPRING in the northern states when mild humid air flows over relatively cold snow ground. Or when warm and humid air streams over a cold surface.

Steam Fog - late fall or winter when extremely cold dry air flows over a large unfrozen body of water. Over a heated hot tub or swimming pool on a cold day.

Radiation Fog - clear night sky light winds and an air mass that is humid near the ground, radiational cooling may cause sit near ground to approach saturation. Ground Cloud forms. Marshy areas where soil is saturated with rainfall or snowmelt

Upslope Fog - hillsides or mountain slopes. Ascending humid air undergoes expansional cooling and reached saturation
