Q

Circadian Rhythm

A

clock at zero when waking up, goes back to this the next you wake up; behavior that synchronize with the 24 hour cycle of the day

Examples:
 Sleep/wake cycle
 Body temperature
 Blood pressure
 Blood sugar level
 Periods of time of eating
 Sometimes seasonal depression

Q

Consciousness

A

Awareness of external events and internal sensations while under a condition of arousal(level of awakeness); Not only responding, but aware of things within you grasp/vision

Q

Metacognition

A

thinking about thinking; Thinking about your own thoughts; Concentrating on what is going on inside your head; Introspection very similar, just used by other branch of psychology

Q

Higher Level consciousness

A

controlled processing, in which individuals are actively thinking and alert; focused on their tasks and goals; have to try, put effort into focusing; not happening automatically, using brain effort to put attention on one thing

example: studying for a test, remembering, and examining material; learning a new skill, like playing an instrument

Q

Lower level consciousness

A

automatic processing and daydreaming, which requires little attention and focus; Well-practiced skill that you do not really need conscious effort to do it

Example: driving, typing; letting your mind wander

Q

Altered States of Consciousness

A

produced by drugs, trauma and fatigue

Example: alcohol is popular drug to shift consciousness experience; drug taken to hallucinate

Q

Subconscious awareness

A

usually occurs when people are asleep and dreaming, but also occurs when we are awake; Not really aware of environment; Body not processing them, or at such minimal levels that you do not know they are happening

Examples: sleep and dreaming; blindsight

Q

Blindsight Study

A

o Light information goes in and processed to a certain extent; can only recognize motion, not what the object is around them; Only can see out of left eye, right eye is blind

Split-brain patient example: Man living with splut brain, could only read certain words, can only write/draw certain things example

Q

No Awareness

A

usually occurs when we are knocked out or anesthetized; Sometimes alcohol can do this, or sudden drop of blood pressure

Q

Biological Clock

A

brain system that detects the passage of time, using internal and external cues, and regulates body system accordingly; * Can be difficult with opposite rhythms changing a bunch(Country going from a lot of darkness during the year vs a lot of natural light during the year); Held inside the Hypothalamus(since it regulates things in the brain!)

Q

Suprachiasmatic Nucleus

A

group of cells in charge of detecting how much time has passed; part of the hypothalamus that uses input from the eyes to synchronize its rhythm with the daily cycle of light and dark

Q

Affects of sleep deprivation

A
  • Crankiness, irritability, sleepiness
  • Poor memory
  • Poor performance
  • Poor moral judgements
  • Health costs
(CORRELATION STUDIES BUT CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION)
17
Q

What happens to our clock when you disrupt your sleep/wake cycle? How can you reset it?

A

Different cycles will cause you to need time to shift the clock; Fight the clock, strict with the clock in your brain/body

Sleep and wakeup at appropriate times; Exposure to appropriate light/dark cues; Melatonin
