A status offense is prohibited act that is only illegal to juveniles or underage kids.
A criminal violation can be non-violent and violent, it is a mandatory court appearance.
Compared to boys, are girls more likely to commit a status offense? How do status offenses play a major role in girls’ delinquency?
-Status offenses account for 15% of arrests for girls, and larceny accounts for 25%. Comparatively, status offenses account for only 9% of boys arrest while larceny accounts for 13%.
- Larceny and status offenses continue to play more significant role in girls delinquency than boys.
- Girls are “arrested for status offenses at a higher rate than boys
-Girls are subjected to the double standard of gender, class, and race. Girls are held to a higher standard of being lady like and if they break that standard there are consequences. While boys are subjected to the notion of “boys will be boys”. They do commit the same crimes, but their sentencing is much less.
Chesney-Lind and Pasko demonstrate that, within the past ten years, girls’ rates of violence have gone down.
However, rates of “other assaults” and robbery arrests have gone up slightly.
