Exam 1: Chapter 3 Flashcards
How does annual Uniform Crime Report (UCR) statistics – on criminal offending for all eight (8) Index Crimes – present a challenge to feminist criminology?
Police agencies report to FBI, supposed to be every 30 days.
Critiques:
-It lacks reporting consistency
-Only shows rates and percentage
-Don’t know the offender characteristics (or victims)
-Hierarchy Rule
Britton suggests that, “the feminist revolution in criminology is still incomplete.” What does she mean by this?
Feminist criminology is still regarded as something outside the mainstream. This is shown in how speciality sections like “Women and Crime” are offered.
Why do you think research on women’s offending behavior has been taken up by liberal feminists?
Liberal Feminists don’t believe the system to be inherently unequal; discrimination. Therefore, they want to focus on how women also contribute to their own incarceration.
Why do you think research on women’s victimization has been taken up by radical feminists?
Radical feminists believe women to be a victim of patriarchy. Therefore, they want to analyze how society causes victims of women in the CRJ system.
How can feminist criminologists “rethink” criminology’s relationship to the state?
Criminology’s relationship to the state is to create policies and legislation within the CJS. Feminist criminologists can “rethink” criminology’s relationship to the state by educating others on feminist criminology and how it is important to include all genders, races, and class in our research and studies.
What are the 8 index crimes under UCR?
1) murder/ homicide
2) rape
3) robbery
4) aggravated assault
5) burglary
6) motor vehicle theft
7) larceny-theft
8) arson
What is feminist criminology? Give an example.
Seeks to address the limitations found within the CJS by enhancing our understanding of both male and female offending as well as CJS responses to their crimes.
Ex: Teaching a Women and Crime lecture to Criminal Justice major students.
What is liberal feminism?
Inequality due to un-equal opportunities.
What is radical feminism?
Patriarchy and patriarchal institutions are the reason women cannot succeed, as they are systematically oppressed.
What is first period feminist criminology (aka first phase)? Given an example.
Focused primarily on white, upper-class women. There was no data on women and crime.
Ex: Began in mid-1800s when women demanded the right to vote.
What is the second period feminist criminology (aka second phase)? Give an example.
Developed in the 1960s when other marginalized groups were also challenging societal roles and expectations. Argued that women needed to have equal access to opportunities, freedoms, and liberties. Data finally gathered was now applied to criminology.
Ex: Civil Rights Movement
What is the second period feminist criminology (aka second phase)? Give an example.

Ex: Civil Rights Movement
What is ethnography? Give an example.
The study of people and their cultures.
Ex: Cameron observed black girls living in the south between the ages of 10-20 and documented their experiences, victimizations, criminality, etc.
