Exam 1: Chapter 2 Flashcards
How does the media treat girls’ violence? Why do you think the media focuses on such “bad girls”?
The media tends to link the increase in girls’ violence to young girls becoming more like boys. The media often ties “bad girls” to the idea of women seeking equality with men, assuming women will become more manlike when it comes to crime and violence.
They now police “masculine” behavior over sexuality.
Based on the data presented within this chapter, are girls really getting more violent?
No, new policies are more intense when it comes to status offenses (i.e. out past curfew) . Also, domestic violence against parents of a female minor is more likely to be reported than male minors. These young girls are often tired of the abuse.
Historically, girls have been arrested for status offenses. Today, how are girls “relabeled”. What is the main problem with this process?
A status offense are noncriminal offenses. Some examples of status offenses include running away or being incorrigible. Girls are relabeled due to adults being encouraged to report defiant daughters to police, an increase in arrests due to assault and domestic violence charges, and how society has begun to no longer trivialize female violence.
This process is a problem, because many of the assault and domestic violence cases against women can be very trivial (i.e. throwing cookies at someone), and the young girls being charged were the victims of domestic violence, either in the past or present.
How is the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program an example of “upcriming” policies that disproportionately affect girls?
Olweus’ program ignores the differences in how boys and girls tend to bully other, boys are more likely to bully directly while girls bully indirectly. Therefore, girls who bully many not necessarily appear aggressive to adults, and once the victim of this type of bullying retaliates they can be seen as the aggressor.
What do you think the authors mean by “vengeful equity”?
Vengeful equity is the process of criminalizing girls’ violence in the same way women’s sexuality was policed. Although, the former is masked as equity while the latter was justified by gender differences.
What are some of the ways that girls are disadvantaged in the criminal justice system?
Women can be disadvantaged by the criminal justice system due to certain biological differences (i.e. menstrual cycle) and how they deal with child care (i.e. in the past women were handcuffed during childbirth).
What is patriarchy?
A historical system created by men, for men.
Supposedly, for defense.
What is a status offense? List an example.
A status offense are noncriminal offenses. Some examples of status offenses include running away or being incorrigible.
What do the authors mean by “upcriming” ?
Upcriming is “the effect of increasing the severity of criminal penalties associated with particular offenses, like minor forms of school bullying and fighting”.
