Exam 2 - Breastfeeding + Formulal Flashcards
5 stages of Lactation: Mammogenesis, lactogenesis, galactokinesis, galactopoiesis, involution
What vitamins are deficient in human breast milk?
Vit D and K
Mothers should NOT breast feed if they have one or more of the following:
HIV infection, human T-cell lymphotropic virus Type I or II
Untreated brucellosis
Ebola virus
Active HSV lesion on breast (may use other breast)
POs Hep B SAG - neonate MUST have initial dose of Hep B vaccine and HBIG
Use of illicit opioids, cocaine or phencyclidine
Infant condition of galactosemia
81 times more likely to develop severe bleeding than those who don’t get the vit K shot.
Highest level of alcohol in breast milk is ______ after consumption.
Level of alcohol in breast milk closely mimics maternal BAC.
_____ a day is okay
30-60min
1 standard drink/day.
Mastitis tx
Bacteria from skin or in infants mouth
PCN 10-14 days. Continue breastfeeding
When is the time that most mothers stop breast feeding?
70% at 6 weeks.
Term infant formula is ______kcal/oz
20kcal/oz
S/s of lactose intolerance in infants
Gassy, fussy, rash, small bit of blood in stool, family Hx.
Whey milk protein has the most alpha and beta globulin.
What is the patho Phys behind cow milk protein intolerance?
Unabsorbed whey proteins (alpha Dan beta globulin) come in contact with intestinal lining and irritate it. Most outgrow by 4 years.
If you have an infant that is sensitive to certain formula, its best to move between formulas with differing whey: casein ratios rather than between formulas with similar profiles.
PHWF does not prevent lactose intolerance in the future, it just makes it more easy for patient to tolerate the formula.
If a baby is less than 10th percentile for age, consider a formula with a higher than 20kcal/ml count. Usually considered in conjunction with pediatrician or nutritionist.
DHA and ARA are omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid supplements in formula. DHA associated with retinal cell function, reduced triglyceride levels, altered serotonin levels in CNS (depression, ADHD)
ARA associated with synchronizing neuronal activity.
