Exam #2 Flashcards
What is the Dengue Virus’s Genus/Family?
Genus: Flavivirus Family: Flaviviridae
What is Dengue Virus’s vector?
- Aedes aegypti (mosquito) 2. Aedes albopictus (mosquito)
What is Dengue Virus’s pathogen life cycle?
Dengue virus originally came from monkeys in a sylvatic (forest) cycle but is currently maintained in human populations.
What is Dengue Virus’s Reservoir host?
?
What are some Dengue Virus’s Symptoms?
1] 50% asymptomatic
2] undifferentiated fever (most common)
3] classic dengue fever (febrile) (fever, headache, muscle and joint
pain pain, nausea/vomiting, rash)
4] dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF)
5] dengue shock syndrome (DSS) (Weak rapid pulse, Narrow pulse pressure (less than 20 mm Hg) Cold, clammy skin and restlessness)
What is Dengue Virus’s History ?
Classic dengue was frist recognised in the 17th century. DHF was first recognized in 1950s in Philippines and Thailand.
By the 1970’s nine countries experienced DHF. Unplanned Urbanization, Growing populations, Poor housing, Poor vector control, and Travel and migration are thought to be reasons for reemergence
Dengue Virus Facts
-very limited cross immunity -5 serotypes -Risk for DHF increased ~100x with 2nd infection -hyperendemic in many areas (multile serotypes)
Dengue Virus test
IgM positive => recent exposure. IgG positive => exposure at some time in the past

what are some Zika symptoms ?
-most people are asymptomatic -rash
- fever
- pain in joint or muscle
- headache
- conjunctivitis. Rare Symptoms: - microencephaly and other birth defects
- Guillain-Barre syndrom
- weakness or paralyses due
to attack on nervous system by
immune system
- meningitis, meningoencephalitis
