What is the difference between Theravada Buddhism and Mahyana Buddhism?
Theravada Buddhism is the oldest form of Buddhism. It is a religion for the monks. They believe that only monks can reach enlightenment. These types of Buddhists are typically the ones with shaved heads and yellow robes. Their main goal is to gain wisdom and detachment.
The Mahyana Buddhism is the largest form of Buddhism. They believe that everyone can reach enlightenment. They also believe that liberation can be found through the help of others. Their main goal is to be free from samsara.
Siddhartha Gautama

- lived on a palmful of water and a single grain of rice
- almost died but world protectors saved him
- finds a tree and sits under it to reach enlightenment
- goes on to spend his life teaching
- died at age 80 from eating a piece of rotten meat
