Exam Flashcards
Why is it bad to switch off a computer directly, and what should be done instead
It could damage files that are still open
Should use the shut-down procedure of the operating system
What is a plug-in, and what does it typically allow someone to do while browsing?
A plug-in is a program
It allows one to view multimedia effects.
Why does changing a file name extension make the file unstable?
The file extension indicates to the operating system what program it must use to open the file
Changing the file extension confuses the operating system about which program to use, leading to error messages or opening the file in the wrong program.
Why would you zip a file
To save storage space
Why do we create shortcuts
They are useful to quickly access items that you use frequently
What aspect of open source software remains free despite potential charges for support and documentation?
The source code is free
Two features of an integrated software package
The programs have similar user interfaces – if you know one, it is easier to learn to use another program in the package.
It is designed for easy data exchange between the programs.
What is one valid reason for making a copy of a DVD that wouldn’t be considered software piracy?
License agreements generally allow one to make one copy for backup purposes.
What are two reasons why you might have to pay for a shareware program you like, even though it’s initially available for free download?
The shareware program may be programmed to stop working when the trial period has
expired
The trial version also sometimes does not include all of the features of the full version –
you need to pay to get the ‘full’ version.
Give a few reasons why it is critical to back up or make copies of files on a regular basis.
Files can be accidentally deleted or overwritten.
Files can sometimes become corrupt
Two reasons why faxes have largely been replaced by e-mail as the preferred means of communication and document transfer.
E-mail is quicker than fax.
Email is cheaper to use because it doesn’t require fax paper or a fax machine; you only need an Internet connection.
Why is it necessary for a computer always to have some RAM as well as storage space
Before any program can be run or any data can be processed it must be loaded into RAM first.
Storage is where all the ‘saved’ work and programs are stored while the
computer is switched off
Explain what an optical drive is
An optical disc drive (ODD) in a computer system allows you to use CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs to listen to music or watch a movie.
What happens when a computer starts up?
•When you press the power button, the computer supplies power to its components —the motherboard, CPU, hard disks, solid state drives, graphics processors, and everything else in the computer.
Mention TWO reasons why computer users prefer to use SSD’s and not HDD’s.
SSD (Solid State Drive) hard drives are faster, more reliable and much more efficient than normal hard drives (HDD).
