How email works

A
  1. Mail is sent to the SMTP server.
  2. The SMTP server requests the recipient’s domain address, and DNS sends the address back to the SMTP server.
  3. If the recipient’s account is on the same mail server, the SMTP server directs the mail to the local POP or IMAP server.
  4. If the recipient’s SMTP server receives the mail, it forwards it to the POP or IMAP server, which then delivers the message to the recipient.
