Affective disorders

Anesthesiology
Administration of drugs for the prevention or relief of pain during surgery.
Angioplasty
Reconstruction or restructuring of a blood vessel by operative means or nonsurgical techniques. Ex: ballon dialation or laser.
Anorexia nervosa
Mental disturbance characterized by self-imposed starvation because the patient may feel full even when emaciated.
Atherosclerosis
A form of hardening of the arteries caused by accumulation of substances such as fatty deposits.
Bulimia
Mental disturbance that leads to bouts of overheating followed by induced vomiting.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Medical procedure used to restart a patient’s heart and breathing when the patient has suffered a heart failure.

Presence of more than one health problem in an individual.
Dementia
Brain disorder characterized by progressive mental deterioration with loss of memory. Alzheimer’s disease is one disorder that leads to severe dementia.

Dermatology
Medical science pertaining to the study of the skin and its diseases.
Dyspnea
Difficult or labored respiration, shortness of breath.
Emergent condition
Acute medical condition that requires immediate medical attention.

Inflammation of the brain.
Encephalogragphy
X-ray examination of the brain.
Enteral
Within or by way of the intestine.
Epidemiology
The study of the distribution and determinants of health, health-related behavior, disease, disorder, and death in a population group.
Etiology
Study of causes of disease or dysfunction.
Gatekeeper
Primary care physician who functions as the provider of first contact to deliver primary care services and to make referrals for specialty care.
Geriatrics
A branch of medicine that deals with the problems and diseases that accompany aging.
Gerontology
Study of the aging process and the special problems associated with aging.

Paralysis of one-half of the body.
Holistic medicine
A philosophy of health that emphasizes the well-being of every aspect of a person, including the physical, mental, social, and spiritual aspects of health.
Homeopathy
A system of medicine based on theory that “like cures like”, meaning large doses of substances that produce symptoms of a disease in healthy people can be administered in small and diluted doses to cure the same illness. Founded in 18th century. By Samuel Hahnemann a German physician
