Exam 1 - Stroke Flashcards
define stroke
cerebrovascular accident CVA
non traumatic brain injury caused by disruption of blood flow to the brain (when blood flow is interrupted, brain receives no oxygen or nutrients -> brain cell death)
stroke incidence
occurs every 40 secs
3rd leading cause of death (heart disease, cancer)
1st leading cause of disability in US
2 types of stroke
ischemic and hemorrhagic
ischemic stroke
occlusion
TIA transient ischemic attack (mini stroke for period of time comes and goes)
thrombotic (blood flow is impaired because of a blockage to one or more of the arteries supplying blood to the brain. the process leading to this blockage is known as thrombosis “clot formation”)
embolic (a blood clot forms somewhere in the body & travels through blood to your brain. once in brain, the clot eventually travels to a blood vessel small enough to block its passage. clot lodges there, blocking the blood vessel and causing a stroke “clot lodges there”)
hemorrhagic stroke
ruptured
HTN (pressure on the vessels)
aneurysms (weak vessels, clot can lodge in common: left atrium)
AV malformation (congenital)
5 warning signs of stroke
- sudden numbness/weakness in face, arm, leg (esp. on one side)
- sudden confusion, trouble speaking/understanding
- sudden vision changes in one or both eyes
- sudden loss of balance, coordination, trouble walking
- sudden severe headaches (hemorrhagic)
agnosia
inability to recognize sensory inputs such as light, sound, and touch
apraxia
inability to execute a voluntary motor movement despite being able to demonstrate normal muscle function
aphasia
loss of ability to understand or express speech
ataxia
loss of full control of bodily movements
dysphagia
difficulty of swallowing
dysarthria
difficult or unclear articulation of speech
emotional lability
regular occurrence of unstable, disproportionate emotional displays
hemiparesis
hemiplegia
weakness on one side of the body
paralysis on one side of the body
homonymous hemianopsia
visual field loss on the same side of both eyes
