Exam 1 Part 1 Flashcards
What a child is able to do that is beyond their limit with support
Zone of proximal development
Biologically based neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significant difficulties in social communication and repetitive, restricted patterns of interests, behaviors, and/or activities
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
What is the rationale for merging various diagnoses of autism
Differentiating among different disorders on the spectrum often is associated not with features of the disorder but with severity, language level, intelligence.
What is the rationale for merging social and communication deficits?
Communication and social behaviors cannot be separated, delays in language are not unique nor universal in ASD
What is the diagnostic criteria of ASD?
Impairment in social communication, receptive behaviors/restricted interests, and severity rating
What 3 impairments in social communication must be required in diagnosing ASD?
Impairments in social-emotional reciprocity, social use of nonverbal behavior (body language), difficulty developing friendships
What 2 of 4 repetitive behaviors and restricted interests must be required in diagnosing ASD?
Repetitive movement and speech, inflexible adherence to routines, highly restricted or fixed interests, unusual sensory interests/response
What are examples of repetitive behavior?
Body movements, behavior with objects, speech (echolalia)
What is an example of an inflexible adherence to routines?
Transitions, daily routines, eating
What are examples of children with ASD having a highly restricted or fixated interests
Preoccupation with unusual objects, perseverative interests
What are examples of unusual sensory interests or responses?
Pain sensation, sound response, texture aversion, proprioception seeking
What are examples of social-emotional reciprocity impairments?
Limited ability to describe own emotions, less initiation, not responding to their name, limited monitoring of attentional focus of others (cannot tell someone’s emotion if someone lost interest), turn-taking, continent responses, limited response to caregiver smile, normal back and forth conversation
