Exam 1 - Membranes Flashcards
Viscera
- Organ
- Usually in the thoracic and Abdomniopelvic cavities
Serous membrane
- Slippery
- Double layered
- Covers viscera
- Lines walls of thorax and abdomen
Parietal layer
- Serous membrane that lines the walls of cavity
- Thin epithelium
Visceral layer
- Serous membrane that covers and adheres to viscera inside of cavity
- Thin epithelium
Serous fluid
- Lubricating fluid between visceral and parietal layers
- Reduces friction
- Allows viscera to move
Visceral Pleura
Clings to surface of lungs
Parietal pleura
- Lines the chest wall
- Covers superior surface of diaphragm
Pleural cavity
-Space between Parietal pleura and Visceral pleura
Pericardium
-Serous membranes of pericardial cavity
Visceral pericardium
-Covers surface of heart
Parietal pericardium
-Lines the chest wall
Pericardial cavity
-Space between Parietal pericardium and Visceral pericardium
Peritoneum
Serous membrane of abdominal cavity
Visceral peritoneum
-Covers the abdominal viscera
Parietal peritoneum
- Lines abdominal wall
- Covers inferior surface of diaphragm
Peritoneal cavity
- Space between Visceral peritoneum and Parietal peritoneum
- Houses “most” abdominal organs
Retroperitoneal cavity
- Between Parietal peritoneum and posterior abdominal wall
- Kidneys, Adrenal glands, Pancreas, Duodenum, Ascending and descending colons, part of abdominal aorta, and IVC
