Exam 1 Material Flashcards
What was New Netherland?
It was the first established Dutch colony in North America in 1609. Its central area was New Amsterdam and was highly culturally diverse.
When was New Netherland seized?
1664 - The British seized control over New Netherland and named it New York (after Duke of York)
What was significant about New Netherland?
(1) it was a perfect example of a restoration colony and helped demonstrate the British monarch’s power and (2) more importantly, the British integrated the Dutch’s diverse lifestyles/cultures into their colony (with requirements of loyalty to the crown as well as consent to taxation), and this allowed continual bringing-in of diversity, which helped change the dynamic/understanding of what it meant to be British subject in North America.
What was triangular trade?
It began in the 1600s (17th century) and linked Europe, Asia, and the Americas in relation to commerce/trade. The idea was that the colonies producing raw materials and crops were taken to England, where they were made as goods, then taken to Africa for the trading of enslaved people, and then back to the Americas with finished goods and slaves.
Why was triangular trade significant?
It majorly enabled British colonization and funded its economy.
