What impression did the British have on Africans?
They made conceptions through religious view and Biblical explanations; the “curse of Ham” which had descendants marked by black.
When were the first enslaved Africans brought into Virginia?
1619 - prior to this, tobacco planters relied on indentured servants mostly (3/4 or 75% of the 120,000 people brought to VA were that).
Why didn’t planters use slavery as much?
It was more expensive and risky of an investment; Africans also died just as easily as whites.
What was the “Body of Liberties”?
It named the ways by which someone could be enslaved: (1) CAPTIVE IN WAR, (2) willingly se themselves as slaves (debt or powerful lever like family, and (3) previously enslaved by someone else.
What events happened in 1650?
Approximately 300 people of African ancestry were living in Virginia, the tobacco economy FLATLINES, Virginians pushed interior to native land, and indentured servants began surviving to grow tobacco themselves.
What happened when things got rough in 1650?
Planters tried to extract more from their servants - tagged on years, stiffened punishments, and doubled down - which lead towards VIOLENCE.
What was Bacon’s Rebellion?
Bacon was a wannabe aristocrat and wanted to be involved in royal council in VA. Berkeley declined, so Bacon persuaded Virginians that their governor valued the native lives over their own, which made people turn on Berkeley.
What did the British do to prevent another rebellion?
Virgin a began in the 1660’s to enact laws that regulated and defined slavery. No more interracial marriage, no more Christian-bias, and ability for Africans to be hit 30-40 times from a white person.
What new class was created at the bottom of the social hierarchy?
Enslaved people - people used harsh words to justify slavery.

He knows what freedom means because of the knowledge of unfreedom by slaves.
