Exam 1- impact of microbes Flashcards
what qualifies as a microbe?
-so small it cannot be seen by the naked eye
-single celled organism
what is microbial antagonism?
-The inhibition of one bacterial organism by another. Through microbial antagonism, the normal bacterial flora of the body provides some defense against disease-causing organisms. (opportunistic pathogens)
Impacts of microorganisms:
- teach us basic biology-metabolism, react to stimuli, structure of cells, etc.
- can cause disease
3.make and spoil foods
4.recycling
5.microbes are everywhere
why do we study basic biology with microbes?
easy to study, and manipulate
what kills all bacteria including drug resistant bacteria?
tricolsan
difference between normal and transient microbiota?
The normal microbiota consists of microorganisms that constantly live in or on our bodies (not central nervous system, blood, or the bladder). The term transient microbiota refers to microorganisms that are only temporarily found in the human body and do not colonize, and these may include pathogenic microorganisms.
what is the human microbiome?
cataloging of normal microbes in the body
what is a pathogen?
an organism that causes disease, an organism that does not have a binding agreement with you as the host
what does virulence measure?
pathogenisy (avirulent + virulent)
what is an opportunistic pathogen?
normal microbiota that can overgrow and lead to infection and disease if given the opportunity
levels of pathogens
1.colonize (grow)
2.infect (overgrow)
3.disease (effect of infection)
what does systemic mean?
all over
What does localize mean?
stayed in one place
what does dissemination mean?
spreads
what is a nosocomial pathogen?
a hospital acquired pathogen
What is bacteremia?
bacteria in the bloodstream
What is septicemia?
Potentially pathogenic bacteria in the bloodstream
What is toxemia?
toxin in the bloodstream
What is viremia?
virus particles in the bloodstream
What is Fungemia?
Fungi in the bloodstream
what is mycorrhizae?
on the roots of most plants, help with nitrogen fixation and water absorbtion
what is decomposition?
the natural form of recycling of organic and inorganic materials to elemental forms
what is biodegration?
synthetic form of recycling using organisms
