Exam 1: Dialysis Flashcards
how often does a hemodialysis patient need treatment?
3 times/week
how long are hemodialysis treatments?
four hours
hemodialysis removes fluid very quickly, which puts stress on what body organ?
heart, effecting BP
how does dialysis work?
blood is removed through access point (usually arm), filtered through an artificial kidney machine, removing the waste from the blood, warming the blood, and returning it to the body.
what fluid is used to “wash away” waste in hemodialysis?
dialysate
peritoneal dialysis filters fluid through what?
peritoneal - lining of the abdomen
after a set “dwelling” time, where does the filtered waste go?
flows out of the body through a catheter
what fluid is infused into the abdomen to filter waste?
dialysate
what must be done to dialysate before infusing?
must be warmed
what is a major complication of peritoneal dialysis?
peritonitis
how often is the dialysate replaced in peritoneal dialysis?
every 30-40 minutes, 4 times/day
what is a benefit of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)?
slower type of dialysis, which puts less stress on the heart
how long is CRRT used?
until patients kidneys start recovering or until they have more stable BP to tolerate regular dialysis
what is the first sign of dialysis working?
patient starts to make urine
where is CRRT most often used?
ICU
what should be obtained before and after dialysis?
weight
what must be done if a kidney transplant is rejected within the first 24-48 hours?
remove the kidney
what 2 things are a big cause for AKI?
NSAIDs
IV contrast
what two things do you not give before dialysis? why?
diuretics and antihypertensives; they both decrease BP and BP will already be decreased during dialysis
what are the 5 main reasons someone may need dialysis? (AEIOU)
Acid-base problems
Electrolyte problems
Intoxications
Overload of fluid
Uremic symptoms
