Exam 1: Common Medicines Flashcards
What is prilosec?
omeprazole, proton pump inhibitor
What are common S/E of prilosec?
HA, N/V/D, hepatic impairment, pancreatitis, fractures
What are PT implications of prilosec?
dizziness, may cause fractures
What is vicodine?
opioid used for pain control
What are common S/E of vicodine?
Respiratory depression, bradycardia, dizziness, drowsiness, N/V, sweating, hepatotoxicity, thrombocytopenia
What are PT implications of vicodine?
can be difficult or unsafe for patient to exercise, check vitals
What are examples of NSAIDS?
ibuprofen, Naproxyn
What are common s/e of NSAIDS?
Increased risk of MI/stroke, N/V, diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, GI distress/bleeding, skin rash, DVT, anemia, ecchymosis
What are PT implications of NSAIDS?
Risk for increased bleeding (GI), monitor for signs of DVT, consider dosage
What are common S/E of multivitamins?
Upset stomach, H/A, severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, swelling of face, etc), muscle weakness
What are PT implications of multivitamins?
Monitor for difficulty breathing/skin rash (overdose), look for muscle weakness
What is glucosamine chondroitin?
cartilage supplement
What are SE of glucosamine?
Upset stomach/GI pain, increase in BP/HR, drowsiness, insomnia, H/A, N/V, skin reactions, sun sensitivity, chest pain, nail toughening
What are PT implications of glucosamine?
May increase risk for bleeding, elevates BP (monitor vitals), assess DOE and RPE (d/t chest tightness/difficulty breathing)
What is lipitor?
statin
What are SE of lipitor?
Muscle weakness/myopathy, joint pain, confusion, dizziness, GI disturbances, liver toxicity, rhabdomyolysis (rare)
What are PT implications of lipitor?
check for muscle weakness/increased fatigue/joint pain monitor for sx of liver dysfunction, sx of rhabdomyolysis
What is lopressor?
beta blocker
What are S/E of lopressor?
N/V, chest pain, dizziness, SOB, general drowsiness/weakness, bronchoconstriction bradycardia, masking of hyperglycemia
What are PT implications of lopressor?
use RPE/DOE scale to monitor exertion during exercise, be aware of sx of MI, monitor blood glucose in DM pt
What are s/e of tums?
constipation, GI upset, stomach/abdominal pain, N/V, loss of appetite, hypercalcemia, acid rebound, dry mouth
What are pt implications of tums?
Look for sx of GI issues, look for sx of hypercalcemia (muscle pain/twitching)
Drug-Drug: decreases the effect of Lopressor (take 2hrs apart)
What is oxycodone?
analgesic opioid for pain control
What are S/E of oxycodone?
Dizziness/faint with positional changes, N/V, constipation, drowsiness, lack of strength, loss of appetite, dry mouth, diaphoresis, confusion, dysphoria (anxiety, depression, unease), euphoria
What are PT implications of oxycodone?
be aware of mental status, monitor vitals (esp BP)change positions slowly to minimize risk of dizziness, monitor vitals, Rx pt 30-60min after administration, pt should not drive or operate heavy machinery, pt should not drink ETOH
What is Zestril?
lisinopril, ACE inhibitor
What are S/E of Zestril?
Blurred vision, cloudy urine, confusion, decreased urine output, dizziness (esp with positional changes), H/A, sweating, abdominal pain, excessive tiredness or weakness/fatigue, hyperkalemia, elevated BUN/Cr levels
What are PT implications of Zestril?
Monitor vitals (esp BP), Change positions slowly, take breaks PRN d/t fatigue and weakness, sx of hyperkalemia (abdominal pain, confusion, difficulty breathing, irregular heart beat
What is Hydrochlorothiazide?
diuretic
What are SE of Hydrochlorothiazide?
Muscle weakness, dizziness, orthostatic hypotension, cramps, thirst, stomach pain, N/V, diarrhea, H/A, muscle cramps
What are pt implications of Hydrochlorothiazide?
Check for global muscle weakness and accommodate, monitor vitals slow positional changes
