Epidural block: continuous infusion or intermittent injection; usually started when dilation >5 cm.

What must we do as nurses before an epidural
Before the epidural:
Notify the anesthesia care provider when the woman requests the anesthesia
Assessment:
- Level of pain
- Vital signs: BP, pulse, RR, temperature
- Assess FHR
Administer IV bolus (hypotension)
Encourage the patient to void before the procedure
During the epidural how does nursing staff assist
Assist the anesthesia care provider with placement of epidural, including placement of the patient in lateral position or sitting position
After epidural how does nursing staff assist
After the epidural:
- Monitor BP
- Lateral position
- Assess pain levels
- Assessment of side effects: pruritis (itching, 90%), nausea and vomiting (50%), post-procedural headache (3%), uterine retention
- Monitor uterine contractions
- FHR
