Exam 1 A+P Flashcards
Oxytocin
- Stimulates contraction of smooth muscle cells of uterus during childbirth
- causes milk ejection
Antidiueretic hormone
ADH or Vasopresson
- Conserves body water by decreasing urine volume
* decreases water loss through perspiration
Posterior pituitary disorders
Diabetes Insipidus, SIADH
Thyroid gland
Butterfly shaped gland.
•Each molecule contains colloid
Follicular cells
Produce thyroid hormones
or thyroxine
Parafollicular cells (c-cells)
- Produce the hormone calcitonin
- lowers blood calcium
- antagonistic to pth
Calcitonin (CT)
-from parafollicular cells
•lowers blood levels of Ca2+ and HP042+
Chief cells
principle cells
Produce parathyroid hormone (pth, parahormone)
Oxyphil cells
Secrete excess PTH in cases of parathyroid cancer
PTH Disorders
HYPOparathyroidism and
HYPERparathyroidism
Parathyroid hormone
from chief cells
Increases blood Ca2+ and promotes formation of calcitriol which increases rate of dietary Ca2+ and Mg2+ absorption.
What does blood transport?
Oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, hormones, heat, and waste products
What do Red Blood Cells contain?
- Hemoglobin which is used to carry oxygen to all cells
* No Nucleas or other organelle
What do Granular white blood cells contain?
Neutrophils, eosiphils, basophils
What do Agranular white blood cells contain?
•lymphocytes and monocytes
