-Created by John Holland to focus on the importance of one’s vocational interests.
-Part of a broader movement in psychology to study person environment fit
What does the R stand for in Holland’s codes?
R=Realistic
- People who have athletic or mechanical abilities, prefer to work with objects, machines, tools, plants or animals, and the outdoors
What does the I stand for in Holland’s codes?
I=Investigative
- People who like to learn, investigate, analyze, evaluate or solve problems.
Ex: Research & Analyzing Data
What does the A stand for in Holland’s codes?
A=Artistic
- People who have artistic, innovating or intuitional abilities and like to work in unstructured situations using their imagination and creativity.

S= Social
- People who like to work with people to enlighten, inform, help, train, or cure them, skilled with words and communication
What does the E stand for in Holland’s codes?
E= Enterprising
- People who like to work with people, influencing, persuading, performing, leading or managing for organizational goals or economic gain.
Ex: convincing, persuading, selling, Business & Marketing
What does the C stand for in Holland’s Codes?
C=Conventional
- People who like to work with data, have clerical or numerical ability, carry out tasks in detail or follow through on other’s instructions.
Ex: Good at working with numbers

Fit= match between character and work environment
