Ex 11 (Slow Flight) Flashcards
What is the slow flight speed?
Slow flight happens between stall speed and endurance speed
Where does the slow flight range positioned with respect to the power curve?
On the backside of the power curve where total power required increases with slower airspeed
What is the region of reversed command?
Pitch - controls airspeed
Power - controls altitude
What are the 4 major symptoms for slow flight?
- Low airspeed
- Sloppiness in ailerons
- Stall horn
- Needs large left yaw input
What must we ALWAYS do before entering slow flight?
HASEL check
H - Height A - Area (unpopulated) S - Secure E - Engine (temp/press green, carb heat, mixture rich) L - Lookout
How do we perform the lookout in the HASEL check
- Full 180/360 degree turn
- Two 90 degree left and right turns
What is the procedure for entering slow flight after a HASEL check
- Establish endurance
- Reduce power up till 1500rpm
- Maintain altitude by pitching up
- When altitude cannot be held, add back power till about 2000rpm
- Trim for 50Knots
What the two main things to do while in slow flight?
- Lookout
- Monitor engine gauges
How do you recover from slow flight?
P
carb cold
mixture rich
full power
A
pitch forward
T
trim
What is the effect of flaps in slow flight?
Better visibility and engine cooling
What is the maximum bank angle in slow flight?
30 degrees
