EWT - Anxiety Flashcards
Argument - anxiety has a negative effect on recall
Anxiety create physiological arousal in the body which prevents one from paying attention to important cues, making recall worse
Who researched negative effect on recall
Johnson and Scott
Johnson and Scott procedure
Led ppts to believe the were in a lab experiment. 2 conditions low and high anxiety. While sitting in the waiting room in the 1st condition ppts overheard an argument and saw a man walk with greasy hands and a pen. 2nd condition overheard an argument, glass smash and saw a man walk out with a bloody knife
Johnson and Scott Findings
Ppts had to pick out the man out of 50 photos later. low anxiety 49% compared to 33% high anxiety
Johnson and Scott A03
Pickel - unusualness not anxiety
study conducted in hair salon with raw chicken and scissors
Argument for anxiety having a positive effect on rrecall
A flight or fight response is triggered increasing alertness therefore improving memory/recall.
Who researched positive effect on recall
Yuille and Cutshall
Yuille and Cutshall procedure
Conducted a study on real life shooting at gun shop. Owner shot a thief dead. 23 witnesses, 13 ppts. ppts were interviewed 4-5 months after original interview, accuracy of recall was determined by provided details. They were asked to rate their stress levels during the incident on a scale of 7.
Yuille and Cutshall findings
Those who reported experiencing higher levels of stress were most accurate 88% compared to 75%
Yerkes-Dodson Law
Inverted U-theory - performance increases with stress to a certain point then decreases significantly
