What is identity? Is it static or dynamic?
Identity is a dynamic (and complex) concept – interlacing past and present, the individual and the group
What is meant by master status?
A dominant identity: A domain of identity that is imposed on the individual (e.g. due to social norms )
or
Envisaged by the individual, a domain of identity that is most dominant/ most important status to individual
What does PIF stand for?
Professional Identity Formation
What is meant by self disclosure?
An interaction between at least two individuals where one intends to deliberately divulge something personal to another
Name 5 factors that influence self disclosure?
- Reciprocity – the more we disclose to someone, the more information they are likely to give to us
- Norms – the situation determines how much / what kind of information we disclose
- Trust – The more we trust someone the more we might disclose
- Quality of Relationship – ‘Social penetration theory’ suggests the more socially intimate we are, the greater range of topics we will discuss
- Gender – Females disclose more than males
Give a difference in traditional values in Eastern and Western societies
- Western Societies traditionally value ‘individualism’; promoting self-reliance and personal goals above the collective goals of the social group.
- Eastern Societies traditionally value ‘collectivism’; promoting interdependence and social group goals above those of personal goals.
