  1. Reciprocity – the more we disclose to someone, the more information they are likely to give to us
  2. Norms – the situation determines how much / what kind of information we disclose
  3. Trust – The more we trust someone the more we might disclose
  4. Quality of Relationship – ‘Social penetration theory’ suggests the more socially intimate we are, the greater range of topics we will discuss
  5. Gender – Females disclose more than males
