What are the four domains of internet behavior?
- Mating and sexual competition
- Parenting and kinship
- Trust and social exchange
- Personal information management
What do the different domains represent?
different categories of recurrent adaptive problems that humans have had to solve over time
Mating and sexual competetion hypothesis
Men more than women will enter chat rooms in pursuit of one-time sexual encounters, with the ultimate goal of sexual gratification
Intrasexual competition hypothesis
Young men more than young women will stress their skills and resources in their PHPs and blogs, while women more than men will stress their physical appearance and reputation
Sex differences in jealousy hypothesis
Men more than women will experience jealousy over a partner conducting sexual acts with an online partner, while women more than men will experience jealousy over a partner exchanging emotional secrets with an online partner
Parenting hypothesis
Women will take a more active role than men, on average, in monitoring their children’s online behavior
Kinship hypothesis
Adults will utilize high-cost, high-bandwidth communication channels (e.g., telephone, video communication) more often to communicate with distant kin (e.g., siblings, parents, offspring) than with friends and acquaintances
Trust and social exchange hypothesis
Negative feedback will be distrusted more by eBay users when it is submitted by a single buyer, the same buyer, or affiliated buyers
Personal information management hypothesis
Most people will not disclose personal secrets over the Internet even when guaranteed anonymity in a CMC session
