Art Communication Flashcards
What is the main issue being explored in art as communication?
why do we make art?
traditional definition of art
the expression or application oof human creative skill and imagination
aesthetics
a set of principles concerned with nature and appreciation of beauty
ostension
the quality in some behavior that makes it apparent to an intended audeince that the behavior is an act of communication
framed in a way to make you think I’m communicating something
e.g. finding a grocery list with flowers on the list and framing it– labeling it as art – what do the flowers mean and what is being communicated
According to Noel Carroll, what is the purpose of art?
it communicates tribal affiliation and has the capacity to promote social cohesion among groups (aligns with adaptation theory)
suggests that art is functional
e.g. Haka war dance
Art as adaptation
art is an adaptive mechanism that allows is to form connections with triber members and build trust, which aids our chances of surivival and reproduction
e.g. fiction writing allows to access alternate perspectives and navigate social worlds we would otherwise be unfamiliar with, therefore allowing us to adapt and survive
Art as byproduct
art is a byproduct of a random mutations that doesn’t help or hurt us
e.g. perhaps the ability to hear music is only a byproduct that results from the evolved process of sterosound perception, which was for hunting or evading predators
4 possible theories for art
- aesthetics
- act of communication (ostension)
- art as community (adaptation
- evolutionary adaptive (byproduct, adaptive, genetic noise)
