Evolutionary Assumption Flashcards
Behaviour can be by evolutionary influences.
Charles Darwin - Theory of natural selection
- Environments always changing - sexual reproduction = two parents create new individual.
- Creating a new trait – Individuals who possess traits and this adapted to their environment are most likely to survive to reproduce (Survival of the fittest).
- Genetically determined to behaviour which enhances the individual to survive only produce an actually selected (genes will be passed on to the next generation).
EEA - environment of evolutionary adaptiveness
Environment where any species has adapted to selective pressures at the time.
Evolutionary change for humans
-humans move from Forest life to developing savannas in Africa.
-explains why humans have such large brains relative to their body size.
-humans brain has evolved in response to Complex social organisation.
-humans with particular abilities would be more likely to survive so genes for such behaviours will be passed on.
Mate preferences
Evolutionary theory suggests relationships for those who have certain traits.
- Traits that enhance successfully production on actually selected.
Trivers 1978 - ‘Parental Investment’
How much time effort resources that a parent contributes to development of their offspring.
- Females spend more time and energy in the production than men so they tend to be more fussier when choosing partners.
- Men look for fertile partners.
Formation of sibling relationships
Evolutionary theory can explain close relationships between siblings.
Kin selection - traits that enhance the survival of those who have similar jeans are selected to promote the survival of our groups jeans.
- We have a natural incentive to look after siblings and invest time and energy and resources to ensure they are protected and healthy.
