Evolution Review GUide Flashcards
Evolution
change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations
Who was James Hutton and what did he propose?
He suggested that the earth has been shaped from geological processes over a very long period of time.
Who was Charles Lyell?
Geological processes that shaped the earth over a long period of time in the past are the same processes that operate today.
Natural Selection
Survival of the fittest. Those with traits that are successful with their genetic traits will pass them on and their species will live on.
Homologous Structures
Basic structures appear in different, but related organisms. This indicates they have a common ancestor.
Example of Homologous Structure
Bird Wing and a Human Arm
Analogous Structures
Body parts that serve similar functions, but don’t share structure and development
(No common ancestor)
Example of Analogous Structure
Wing of Bee and Wing of bird
Vestigial Organ
Inherited from ancestors but have since lost their original size and function
Example of Vestigial Organ
Human - 3rd eyelid
Why do Vestigial Organs exist?
Because they don’t affect the organisms fitness or quality of life, so they aren’t eliminated through natural selection.
Gene Pool
Organisms that share a common group of genes
Polygenic Traits
Trait that is controlled by more than 2 genes
Mutations
A change in DNA Sequence
Biogeography
Study of where organisms live now and where their ancestors lived in the past
