Evolution of Healthcare Info Systems Flashcards
As it relates to health info, what is the process of abstraction?
extracting information from a document or data elements from a database to create a brief summary of a patient’s illness, treatment, and outcome and entering the summary into an automated system.
What is a healthcare quality indicator?
A standard against which actual care may be measured to identify a level of performance for that standard.
What is a healthcare quality indicator system?
A system that combines abstraction, reporting, and quality indicators.
What is used to automate the dispensing of a patient’s medication, ensuring the right medication is given to the right patient?
Bar coded medication administration
What is a PIS (Pharmacy information system)
A system that assists providers in ordering, allocating, and administering medication.
What is RxNorm and how does it aid in patient care delivery?
It is standardized nomenclature of drugs providing unambiguous and consistent information, like CPT for pills.
What is an interdisciplinary charting system
Basically the overall system that can be accessed by any clinical employee involved in the patients care…ex. Genesis
What is an anesthesia information system, and how does it function?
System of information on preop, operative, and postop anesthesia-related clinical info. This system follows the patient through the surgical process.
What is a Smart Card?
A portable method of storage of health data
What is a CIS (Clinical Information System)
System that collects and stores medical info from ALL departments as it relates to patient care.
What are target sheets?
Pages that contain only a barcode that tells the scanner and, ultimately, the computer the content of the pages that follow when being scanned in.
If a physician has a bunch of written progress notes, what capability would the DMS need to have in order to incorporate data?
OCR (Optical character recognition), a method of encoding text from analog paper into bitmapped images and translating the images into a form that is computer readable.
What is cloud computing?
The use of computer services over the Internet, to store data or provide other computing resources and functions
What are the benefits of cloud computing?
Affordable, scalable (can always buy more storage), and reliable.
How does DMS improve workflow?
Employees no longer have to physically look for health records or move them from one location to another.
What is Online Analytical Processing (OLAP)?
data access architecture that allows the user to retrieve specific information from a large volume of data.
What is “drilling down” data?
Looking at info from the highest level to the lowest, ex. COVID rates in US, then in Texas, then in Houston
What is “rolling up” data?
Looking at info starting at the lowest level, them gradually assessing greater and greater impact.
What is “slicing and dicing” data?
Looking at the data from multiple viewpoints. Ex. $$ paid out by LOB, then by CPT code, then by Dx code etc
What is a benefit of using voice-to-text transcription?
Increased productivity
What type of system should be used if a (HIM) manager needs to identify incomplete records.
Chart deficiency system
